Not Your Grandfather’s Broadway
September 25th, 2008

We are pleased to announce a new youth troupe. XtremeTeen Broadway replaces the PMT Stars. This new group represents a radical departure from our previous “traditional” approach to our youthful ambassadors. No more sequins and kick lines. Their repertoire will be drawn only from cutting edge musicals written in the last 15 years (e.g. In the Heights, Spring Awakening, Putnam County Spelling Bee, We Will Rock You), emphasizing content that resonates with their peers. We oldtimers will have to wait patiently for the occasional Sound of Music, West Side Story, or Oklahoma while the kids prepare for the future by embracing the present. XtremeTeen Broadway is available for special events. For information please call 412-539-0900 x232.

Letter From the Founding Director
September 25th, 2008

Pittsburgh Musical Theater is a unique company created to serve those who love to see and perform musicals balanced with a vision of inclusiveness and respect for the art of musical theater. The success of the mission of PMT — providing direct access to professionally produced musical theater as a culminating experience of training — rests with our community of artistic staff and students, who are entrusted with the responsibility of keeping musical theater relevant to the present.

I believe the future of musical theater is in the hands of the youth who have been and continue to be nurtured by PMT’s mission. I continue my desire to tap their passion and talent in new and significant ways. One objective is to channel the creative talent of young adults who are committed to fostering the musical theater art form. The joy spread by this summer’s Alice in Wonderland, directed and choreographed by Michael Greer, one of our resident Equity actors, is indicative of this change. New teachers and music directors from top notch training programs will promote this objective.

PMT is proud to be a stepping stone to professional careers. Many of our students and resident performers are now building their careers on Broadway, in film, and on tour. This year Ryan Stana, once a member of Gargaro’s Good Vibrations (the first iteration of X-treme Teen Broadway) and now an entrepreneurial producer of entertainment in the Big Apple, will direct High School Musical for us in January 2009. In addition to directing, he will run seminars for students interested in starting a business and working as producers.

I believe the gradual addition of youthful talent to our artistic team will ensure a vigorous approach to Musical Theater and will secure a sound financial future for PMT. Be certain; however, that both Colleen and I will be watching carefully to ensure that youthful exuberance is framed by mature experience. Allowing the talented young people on the cusp of their careers into PMT’s inner artistic circle should provide all of us with sensational performances for many years to come. We are at an exciting moment in PMT history.

Sincerely,

Ken Gargaro
Founding Director
